Choosing a Roofing Contractor
This process is not as difficult as you might think if you are willing to do
your homework. The State of Washington has provided a number of consumer resources to help
guide you through this process. We strongly recommend their document entitled "Hiring a
Contractor or Remodeler", available online at
http://www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Contractors/HireCon/Resources/default.asp .
The high points are these:
-
Always use a licensed contractor (see details below).
Metroplex Roofing has been issued license number METRORI962JT.
-
Choose a company that has experience in your area and
with the products that you want.
-
Roof warranties are provided by the roofing material
manufacturer. Workmanship warranties are provided by the installation company. Be wary
of companies with very short or very long warranties. Most experts agree that a roof that has
been improperly installed will show problems within the first one or two years.
-
Get references, especially if they are from someone
you trust. Their experience with the contractor will probably be similar to what you can
expect.
-
Understand what you are buying. Are you getting
all new materials? Do they conform to code? What about the quality of flashing,
underlayment, and fasteners?
-
Choose a company with which you are comfortable.
Can they answer all of your questions? When can they begin? Can they conform to your
schedule? How long will it take to do your roof?
-
Don't be afraid to compare prices. Bids can
vary an astonishing amount. You can learn more about how to compare bids in
Comparing Bids.
Why choose Metroplex Roofing?
-
We are bonded, licensed, and insured. Metroplex
Roofing has been issued license number METRORI962JT.
-
We believe that customer service begins during the
estimation process, extends through the roofing job, and continues after your roof has been
installed.
-
Although we are very price competitive, we never
skimp on the quality of materials. All must meet or exceed building code standards and
manufacturers recommendations. We use only 30 lb ASTM felt, 26 gauge steel flashing, and
either stainless steel or hot dipped galvanized fasteners. We always use the recommended
number of fasteners for high wind.
-
We have a very strong work ethic. Our employees
will strive to ensure that your roof is completed on schedule, assuming reasonable weather
conditions. Our customers are pleasantly surprised that their roof is finished while other
roofing companies are still working on their neighbor's houses.
-
Our crews are courteous and efficient, with safety of
the homeowner and crew a primary consideration. Our jobsites are left as clean or cleaner
than we found them.
-
We offer incomparable value. If you receive a
bid that is lower than ours for identical products and materials, we want to know about it.
Why should I use a licensed contractor?
Roofing contractors
are required by state law to register with Labor and Industries for consumer protection. This
license ensures that these contractors meet certain minimum legal
requirements to operate a roofing business in the State of Washington. They must:
- Have a valid
business license and tax id number.
- Have a Federal Tax
ID number if they have employees.
- Be bonded for at
least $6,000.
- Have general
liability insurance.
- Have workmen’s
compensation insurance.
- All obligations
must be up to date.
They also require that certain safety procedures be
observed and that proper safety equipment be used. In addition, the Department of Labor and
Industries tracks all actions against a contractor, building a history that is available for
consumer review.
Without these assurances, the homeowner could be
responsible for paying for any job injuries, property damage, or even for materials for which the
contractor did not pay their supplier. If you already paid your fraudulent contractor, you may even
have to pay twice for the same materials.
You can check on your roofing contractor online or by
telephone. Metroplex Roofing has been issued license number METRORI962JT.

contractors also at Report-a-Fraud Hotline: 1-888-811-5974
You can find out about any pending actions against the
contractor or if the same individual has operated under multiple names in the past. While this may
just be a sign of growth, it can also indicate that the owner has a habit of closing up shop when it
is convenient so that he can shed his liability and responsibilities to customers and suppliers.
